| Itinerary: |
Up in New Hampshire, there is a club called the Appalachian
Mountain Club that was started in 1876. This club has a hut
system (along with lodges and camps) situated in the famous
White Mountains of New Hampshire. This area is home to
some of the prettiest and most rugged hiking trails on the east
coast. The plan is to hike some of these trails and instead of
camping we will sleep in the huts.
The huts are
situated on ridges and or sides of the mountains and offer
breathtaking views. They are manned by crews who will
provide a hot breakfast and a hot dinner each
day.
I strongly encourage you to visit the website
and explore it to answer any questions you might have that
are not answered here.

Day 1 - Arrive later
afternoon, early evening on August 19, 2009 to the Joe
Dodge Lodge at the base of famous Mt Washington. We will
be sleeping in rooms that fit 2-4 people and a shared bath.
We will eat dinner there as well.
Day 2 -
August 20th, 2009 we will wake up and get breakfast and
head out to Lake of the Cloud hut. We can take couple of
routes up there but the recommended route is Tuckerman
Ravine route. The hike up there is approximately 4.6 miles
and an elevation gain of about 3000 ft. Once there we can
check in and get with the hut crew for day hike ideas. There
are many peaks within a mile or so we can visit. Mt
Washington is the most famous and actually has a state park
at the top of it we can go visit. If you like you can also just
hike around the hut and explore. We will have a dinner here.
We will sleep in the bunk room at the hut which includes a
pillow and 3 wool blankets. Recommended you bring a
sleeping bag. The bunkrooms are unheated but
enclosed. This first day will be a tough one up to the
summit of Mountain Washington. The trails are not groomed
and the pace is about 1 mph.
Day 3 - The
next morning we will get breakfast and day hike out to Mizpah
Springs hut approximately 4.6 miles and elevation loss of
1250 feet. We'll have dinner at the hut.
Day
4 - Next day, we'll eat breakfast and then leave for
Highland Center Lodge. Further elevation loss of about 500
feet and 3+ miles. Please understand this is very rugged
territory and there are plenty of day hike options as well. We
will spend the night of August 22th at Highland
Center.
Day 5 - We will wake up at the
Highland Center, get breakfast and depart to the airport. We
will get a shuttle back to the Joe Dodge to pick up any rental
cars we left there. Then depart for the airports each person
flew into.
Please note: There are NO guest
registrations on this event. Each person has to be a MOC
member and have attended difficult hike and/or backpacking
trip this year. I will also vet each person on this trip I am not
familiar with. This is for your safety, my safety, and the groups
safety. These are day hikes but they are in rough terrain and
possible in extreme conditions above the treeline. We go rain,
shine, and even snow.
**** I am happy to
announce our sister club, Atlanta Outdoor Club
(AOC), will be going with us as well. They will bring up 10
people and met us our first night at Joe Dodge Lodge. They
will have the same itinerary as our club.

this trip last year:
